Dies führt dazu, dass die Mikroorganismen aufhören zu atmen und sterben, um den Effekt der Sterilisation und Bakteriostase zu erzielen, also tritt "Kontakttod" ein. In der Struktur steht R für eine aktive Gruppe wie OCH3, OC2H5 usw., die hydrolysiert werden kann, um leicht vernetzbare Silanolgruppen zu bilden, die mit den Hydroxylgruppen an der Oberfläche des Gewebes dehydriert und kondensiert werden.
